How to Rescue Ourselves and Our World
A powerful and far-reaching template, from a deeply wise friend and prophet
Today I want to tell you about an important new book that courageously and unapologetically addresses the cultural trauma we are all grappling with today. My friend and colleague Will Tuttle, renowned author of the bestselling “The World Peace Diet,” (as well as many other books and programs on spirituality, intuition, and social justice) offers us a brand new comprehensive book called “Food For Freedom,” in which he expands his vision further to address the urgency of the current multi-layered political, cultural, spiritual, health and technological crises we have unwittingly created for ourselves.
I just finished reading Dr. Tuttle’s new book, and I found it to be captivating, ultra-timely, refreshingly direct, radically wise, and ultimately hopeful. Will is not afraid to shine a spotlight into the deepest depths of darkness, exposing the evil that sneakily poses as “caring, benevolent, trustworthy, and science-based, and draws us in with promises of safety and respectability, with an underlying justification that the ends justify the means.” Importantly, he assures us that “If we are succeeding in our inner work, we will not be easily drawn in by these deceptive pretexts because our vibratory frequency will not respond to appeals based on security, and which require us to surrender our autonomy and our ethical principles.” YES!!! I wholeheartedly agree, and what a powerful way to speak this truth.
The book is divided into two sections. Part One is called, “OUR BANQUET OF CONSEQUENCES.” This section provides the foundational ideas about the wounds we have all incurred as we were born into a dominant food culture which encourages the enslavement and routine mistreatment and slaughter of innocent, vulnerable animals for our food, and how this is causing “an ongoing cascade of events and conditions that are harmful to us on every level.” There is a boomerang effect.
Dr. Tuttle says, “We are called to explore the deeper, hidden driving forces that propel the situations we find unfolding around us. By making connections that we have been taught not to make, we can rescue ourselves, animals, nature, and our world from the unrecognized harmful repercussions of our food system and its narratives, not just on our physical, environmental, and cultural health, but also on the internal landscape of our attitudes and feelings. This is the empowering adventure that beckons.”
Part Two is called, “THE TWO FUTURES: THE PATH OF TECHNOLOGY AND THE PATH OF SPIRITUALITY.” In this section of the book, Dr. Tuttle takes us on a fascinating deep-deep-dive into the mind-blowingly devastating impacts of hypnotic mind-spells, cultural brainwashing, deception and false narratives, and gullibility to the non-sensical paradoxes and inversions we have all been exploited by. He notes, “When we question and reject inner and outer authorities, truths, and our acculturated sense of purpose, we are faced with a crisis of being, and how we shall live and relate with those around us, who are typically operating under assumptions we no longer see as valid or relevant. It can be profoundly challenging, as well as liberating, to reconnect with our internal guidance system and become more free from conditioned cultural norms and from the prison of social conformity….We are taught that trusting authorities is a virtue, when in truth it is more accurately a pernicious vice that reflects a fear of discomfort, and a mistrust of our inner wisdom and potential. It often reflects a craving for acceptance, a fear of self-responsibility, and a dread of losing face or of being shunned or criticized by authority figures or by our in-group.”
Will offers a relevant quote by Giordano Bruno: “If the first button of one’s coat is wrongly buttoned, all the rest will be crooked.” And Will responds: “So too, if our most basic assumptions about food and reality are erroneous, our entire culture and all of us are unknowingly mistaken about virtually everything we think is true. The more we think we are making progress with our science and technology, the more deluded and miserable we become.” When we finally start to see the patterns that keep repeating, we begin to awaken from the numbing comfort of our delusional slumber.
Our culture has, in many ways “forgotten its purpose and the purpose of human life.” Yes, you can follow the current political narratives and dramas on the world-stage, and cast your vote for the political candidates you prefer (of those selected for us to choose from). Much more importantly though, the biggest positive impact we can each make with our lives is to commit wholeheartedly to personal lifestyle choices that honor nature and all beings, and help replace the status quo with honest, healthy, loving and mutually empowering alternatives. When enough of us find the faith to claim our sovereignty, and consciously choose to live truthfully in love and kindness, we will finally render the corrupt and abusive authorities and institutions obsolete.
Dr. Tuttle presents six keys to healthy living (which are discussed in depth in the complementary handbook, “The World Peace Way”): diet, meditation, relationships, movement, natural living, and creative expression. He explains: “This six-fold path is a spiral leading ever higher, in this life and beyond. All of these six dimensions require commitment and effort, and call us to resist the inner and outer programming of our culture, and instead to follow our intuitive guidance. Going along with cultural dictates is easy. However, the ancient wisdom reminds us that if we want to do only what is easy, our life will be hard and painful; if we are willing to do what is hard, our life will be easy and joyful.”
I think this speaks well to my own life-experiences of discovering that what at first feels hard because it requires muscling up and ‘going against the grain,’ becomes easy once we have practiced long enough for it to have simply become our new way. And because the consciously chosen new way is congruent with our deeper intuitive wisdom, it naturally becomes the joyful way, and we are given the strength to stand firm in our joyful truth even when it requires reconfiguring our relationship with society.
There is so much more I want to share with you from this amazing and necessary book, but I highly recommend that you read and savor the whole book for yourself! You can find it on Amazon, or at Dr. Tuttle’s website. It is HIGH TIME we all awaken to the vast web of deception around us, dismantle our toxic gullibility, and for the highest good of all beings, reclaim joyfully healthy lives truly based in love and freedom.
Many thanks, Ellen, for taking the time to read my new book and share your helpful perspective on the book, as well as on the issues we are facing in our society now. Madeleine and I deeply appreciate your solid reliance on your inner guidance system to not be deceived by the food and medical industries, and to help so many others with your example and teaching as well!
