Spring has officially arrived, no matter what the weather may be where you are today. Can you feel an energetic shift? Yes, the news continues to do what the news does, with more distraction and drama than ever. But YOU - you can choose to cut through the distractions to become the next higher version of yourself, anytime you want. Perhaps the fresh energy of springtime could encourage you to put in motion a significant change you desire for yourself.
Is there something you are pretending to be confused about? Confusion is one of the most heavily leaned on excuses for not taking bold action on our own behalf. An inner story of unworthiness is another biggie. And then of course there is “lack of time,” and “not enough health, energy, money, or approval.”
The 4 C’s offer beautiful clues for getting unstuck, and for consciously releasing ourselves to grow into our best self. Here are the 4 C’s offered by a self-help book I read years ago - clues about what may be holding you back:
Criticism
Complaining
Controlling
Comparing
And here is my own new list that I felt compelled to add: The 4 C’s that will gently and powerfully release you and compel you to grow, and become the next best version of you:
Centering
Connecting
Celebrating
Compassion
There are endless ways to work with these energies, in both lists. Use your imagination! I have developed my own personal morning and evening rituals that frame my days like bookends, with a long conscious ‘pause’ in which I intentionally activate and reflect on these ideas. It takes only a few minutes a day.
When I first get up in the morning, I express out loud my gratitude for the wisdom and guidance I have received from the dreamworld, and I symbolically release my experience of the night. Now that I have invited an energetic opening to greet the new day, I express my gratitude for the new day! And then I invite in the energies I wish to embody that day, such as appreciation, joy, enthusiasm, willingness, compassion, understanding, patience, surrender, wonder….or whatever comes to mind when I am still, and listening for my internal guiding voice. It’s different every day.
One practical idea is to write a journal page about each one of the 4 C’s, in each group (8 journal entries). You could take on one per day for about a week. Put the word you are working with at the top of the page, and write stream-of-consciousness style, just freely writing whatever comes to mind when you think about how that quality shows up in your life, and how you relate to it. Just really shine a light on each one, and see what you learn about yourself and your habitual life-responses.
Pay attention to your energy as you explore the word-quality, and your relationship with it. How does it feel? Is your energy or enthusiasm going down, or up? Are you feeling better, or worse as you interact with that quality in your life? Less grounded, or more grounded? Are you seeing any patterns?
I keep both of these lists posted on my bulletin board above my desk, where I see them every day and ponder how any of them might be showing up that day for me. The truth is, most of us fall into the Criticism/Complaining/Controlling/Comparing traps frequently, perhaps even every day multiple times. Our mind/ego seems to think we can somehow get something valuable through these approaches to life. But in reality, these energetic states all have a very low vibrational quality.
We get an immediate BIG UPGRADE when we shift to qualities of Centering/Connecting/Celebrating/Compassion. It’s not hard to do once you get the hang of it, and it FEELS SO GOOD! These energetic states all have a high vibrational quality, which is felt immediately throughout our whole self. The result is that we radiate a much higher vibration outward into the world around us, and cause the world around us to respond to us differently.
When we CHOOSE TO PROACTIVELY RAISE OURSELVES INTO THESE STATES, no matter what the vibrational quality or tone of what is going on around us (instead of waiting for the world around us to invite us into these higher states), real transformation has begun. In my own experience, life is much more fun and enjoyable when I actively choose to center myself, connect through presence (with myself, with others, with my feelings, with nature, etc.), celebrate easily and frequently - all the simple miracles of everyday life! - and tap into my natural human compassion.
I invite you to start really noticing what you are connecting with throughout each day, whether criticizing or celebrating, complaining or connecting, comparing or compassion. Notice if you have any resistance to letting go of the more habitual negative C’s, and ask yourself about that. See what unfolds if you consciously choose just one of the high-vibration C’s to focus on for a day. Have fun, and witness an inner and outer transformation begin to take place!

Very helpful "spring cleaning" invitation and thoughts, Ellen. I also came across that list of 4 negative C's somewhere in adolescence, and they've stuck with me. They low-barrier activities that are so easy to fall into. Love the 4 C's you suggest to counter them!
Thanks Ellen! - Profoundly simple and transformative - appreciate your sharing these jewels -when we change the channel, so to speak, our mind and heart heals, and these 4 C's are great for that!
